Tetuan (12 miles), the northern capital is a city the size of Bristol with many shops and restaurants. You will also see the Grand Mosque and the ancient Medina (A world heritage site). Travel around the city area by “petite taxi”, distinctive yellow, for a handful of Dirhams. Most of the locals hang out at cafes near “Place Moulay El Mehi” where there is also a cinema. The Medina has many food and craft stalls (Including copper, brass and leather goods). A visit to the medina can seem overwhelming, and you will need to keep your wits about you. However, most people are friendly, and safe enough.
M’Diq. (5 miles) is a pretty seaside town with large promenade, many restaurants and shops, a small market area and a beach. Well worth spending a few hours here in the evenings.
Chefchaouen is an historic town situated in the Rif mountains and is well worth a visit. ( two hour drive). It has many souks and the Medina is very visitor friendly. The main square, “Place Outa El Hammam” is where most of the evening life takes place and has a choice of cafes. It is possible to walk into the nearby hills and explore some spectacular sites and views!
Ceuta (Sebta) (5 miles) a Spanish enclave has many restaurants, bars and shops as well as good nightlife. You will need your passport and Euros. Most of the interesting buildings are situated close to the ferry port. There are numerous plazas and Baroque churches, and a cathedral. There is also a Spanish military museum. The main eateries and bars are located around “Plaza de la constitucion”, close to the ferry port.
Tangiers (1-2 hours) is a legendary city with a rich history and offering many restaurants and shops. It also boasts a large Medina. The “Grand Socco” is the area containing many cafes and is a good central area to “people watch”. Close by is “Foundouk Market” which houses stalls selling everything from pottery, fruit and vegetables through to plain old junk! Many old Museums and Churches are also in this vicinity are worth a visit. Many cheap eateries are located within the Medina, however, these do not serve alcohol, for high end meals, and drinks, visit the seafront.
For a wide range of facilities visit the two local Club Meds. (one is a ten minute walk). Day tickets are available allowing use of all the facilities. There is also a 18 hole golf range at Cabo Negro just a ten minute drive away.
A children’s water park is situated just a 15 minute walk from the apartment and is located just past the Sofitel hotel.
During the summer months, there are numerous snorkelling and diving outlets situated locally as well as jet skis and camel rides on the beach and organised walks in the nearby hills.
